Alfa Romeo 158: The Greatest Grand Prix Car Ever Built

 

The story behind this Alfa is nothing short of legendary. From its inauguration in 1938 until its retirement in 1951 it dominated the racing world, winning 47 of the 54 races it participated in. Two of those years included the first two FiA Formula One World Championship seasons (1951 & 1952). In 1950 it won every race it entered, a feat that no other F1 car has repeated.

In the 1930s the might of Germany’s Mercedes and Auto Union were dominating the world of Grand Prix. Alfa needed to get into the winners circle. So, an Italian man that was known for his “win at all costs” persona and unrelenting competitive nature was enlisted to carry out the task. His name, Enzo Ferrari. Together Alfa and Ferrari went to work on designing, building, and racing a new kind of race car, the Alfa Romeo 158.

 

The Alfetta, or little Alfa (the nickname given to the car) is more than a car, it set the foundation and established the trend of evolution which Formula One still exercises today. It's marque, Alfa Romeo, paved the way for some of the biggest names in F1 racing: Farina, Fangio, Ferrari and more. This is a vehicle incepted by the desire to win.
